A monoprint involves applying paint to a smooth surface like glass and then transferring the image to a thick paper. Clark made some smaller monoprints with ink, but these larger images include a substantial paint layer. The image is unique, and he very likely added even more pigment with a brush after the original transfer dried, resulting in a multi-layered surface that combines opaque and transparent areas in the image.

This process broadened his body of work in various media and this image is a particularly striking example.
