This wartime cartoon character, Icky Square, was invented by Hampton in 1942. Hampton served two years in the Army during WWII, and Icky was loosely based on the artist's own experience. After serving, he attended Kansa State University, in Manhattan, KS on the G.I. Bill. These early cartoons by Black artists are rare, and the military subject matter of this one is unique.
