Description
64 x 74 A handmade patchwork utility quilt dating to the mid-20th century, likely produced between 1940 and 1960. The quilt top is organized into a grid of sixteen large square blocks. Each block is composed of a four-patch variation featuring patterned cotton and cotton-blend squares divided by pink and white striped sashing with a small yellow center square. These primary blocks are separated by wide pink sashing with yellow cornerstone patches at the intersections. The various patches include period-appropriate prints such as small-scale florals, polka dots, and solids in a color palette of blue, brown, green, and pink. The construction is hand-pieced and hand-quilted with large running stitches that follow the vertical and horizontal lines of the sashing. The reverse is finished with a plain off-white cotton muslin backing.
