Description
This vintage American patchwork quilt is constructed in a traditional string pattern, a style commonly used in domestic folk art to repurpose fabric remnants. The quilt top is composed of square blocks, each divided into four triangular segments. Within these segments, narrow strips or strings of various cotton scrap fabrics are pieced together diagonally. The diverse array of fabrics includes calico florals, polka dots, stripes, and checks, predominantly in a palette of red, white, and blue, with accents of yellow, green, and purple. The variety of printed textiles is characteristic of the mid-20th century, specifically the 1940s through the 1960s, and may include repurposed feed sack cloth. The entire piece is hand-quilted, featuring a traditional fan or shell stitching pattern that is clearly visible on the solid white cotton reverse. No maker labels, signatures, or marks are present on the textile.
