Thomas Cumber, a postal worker, was tried at the Old Bailey Newgate in 1837 for pilfering a half-sovereign and a sixpence from a letter he was entrusted to deliver. Despite twice offering restitution, he found that you cannot tamper with his Majesty's mail and was transported for 7 years to New South Wales arriving on the 'Asia' on the 20th March 1838.
