Long-handled brass bed warmer with a perforated hinged lid, designed for pre-heating bedding before sleep. This form was traditionally filled with hot embers or heated material and passed between sheets to warm the bed in the era before central heating. The shallow brass pan is fitted with a turned wooden handle to keep the user's hand safely away from heat, while the pierced lid allowed controlled airflow and heat distribution. Bed warmers of this type were common household implements in colder climates throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and into the early 20th century. Brass was favored for its durability and heat tolerance, and examples showing honest wear are typical of prolonged domestic use. Today, these are primarily appreciated as decorative hearth or bedroom objects with strong historical presence.
The hinge shows damage and has been repaired with solder, visible as photographed. Brass surfaces exhibit oxidation, heat darkening, and general wear consistent with age and use. Wooden handle shows handling wear. Sold as found.
