(1809 - 1870) Union rear admiral and inventor of the cannon which bore his name. He also commanded the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. War-date L.S. as Rear Admiral, 1p. 4to., Off Morris Island’, SC, Feb. 3, 1864, to John L. Davis, commander of the monitor USS MONTAUK. Dahlgren, writing aboard his flagship, the sidewheel gunboat USS PHILADELPHIA, authorizing him to send six sailors whose terms of service have expired home in the screw steamer USS MASSACHUSETTS, listing the men by name. He signs ‘J A Dahlgren’ boldly in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, with mounting strip residue to the verso at the left edge, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
