Description
(1817 - 1884) First Confederate Secretary of War, resigned in 1861 due to poor health and was made a brigadier general serving in Alabama and Florida. Fine association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Huntsville, AL, May 10, 1877, to President Rutherford B. Hayes. Walker writes to recommend a Major John E. Logwood for the position of marshal of the Northern District of Alabama, adding: ‘...He is a democrat, and I feel bound to say that I do not well see how a democrat can apply for office at the hands of a Republican administration.’ He signs very boldly ‘L. P. Walker’ in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds with small chips thereto at the edges, with small pencil notations to each page, the latter adding Walker’s rank, otherwise in very good condition overall.
