Description
(1819 - 1866) Confederate major general who was one of a few Northern-born generals to fight for the South, planned and constructed the defenses of Vicksburg, died shortly after the war. Signature ‘M. L. Smith’ at the top right of a 4to. sheet, presumably the final page of a letter (the main body absent), with sentiment and address to fellow general Mansfield Lovell executed in another hand. The verso of the sheet bears a notation dating the missing letter as being sent from Vicksburg in June 13, 1862, and stating that it concerned Smith’s orders to burn cotton. Shows original mailing folds with minor splits thereto, with archival tape residue beneath the inscribed panel, else very good.
