Description
(1841-1900) Confederate Commandant of the notorious Libby Prison at Richmond. Fine content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., ‘C. S. Prison Rich[mon]d’, May 1, [n.y., likely 1864], to an unnamed captain, in full: ‘The Gen directs that all the yankee negroes be sent home, & I write to call your attention to the fact that there are also some eight or ten free negroes here taken up at Manassas Fairfax &c. Some of them have been here for a long time, among them are Porter who stays in this office & an old man named Geo. They are very good negroes, have behaved themselves well, & tell me that you promised to send them home by the first opportunity. Can they be sent? They think they can go home by going to Fortress Monroe & then via Washington [all sic].’ He signs ‘Th Turner’ at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the top and left edges where detached from a larger sheet, with some ink spotting to the signature and an old ink biographical inscription at top left, otherwise in very good overall condition.
