Description
(1824 - 1901) German-born Union brigadier general, took part in the capture of Norfolk in May, 1862 and then commanded at Suffolk. Weber's brigade was the first to attack the Sunken Road during the Battle of Antietam. His right arm was grievously wounded. He served under Gen. David Hunter and Gen. Franz Sigel in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and was the garrison commander of Harpers Ferry and repelled Jubal A. Early's July 4–7 raid. War-date manuscript L.S., 2pp. 4to., Camp Hamilton, VA, July 11, 1862, a letter of recommendation for three officers who previously served in the German Army to be appointed captains in his regiment, the 20th New York Volunteers. He adds, in part: ‘… It will appear strange to the Genl. commanding to find on the list the names of two officers, who some time ago have tendered their resignations approved and recommended by me received their discharge… But these gentlemen having since learned that no threats can make me shrink from the duties of a commanding officer, regret very much the impropriety of the step they have taken, and applied to me, to use my influence in having them reinstalled in their former offices. Actuated by no other motives, than to best further the interests of my Regt. By giving it good and efficient officers and being convinced that for the future, the gentlemen will link their honor and fame to that of their commanding officer during the war, I again beg leave to submit their names to your kind consideration…’ He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Colonel’. Shows original mailing folds, with slight splits between the two leaves of the letter, and very faintly toned at the edges, otherwise in very good to fine overall condition. SOLD WITH: Signature ‘Max Weber’ in black ink on a 0.75 x 3.25 in. slip of paper, adding his later rank ‘Brig. General’. Mounted, otherwise very good. Two signed pieces, accompanied by a period frontispiece engraving of Weber with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
