(1816 – 1874) American politician and Confederate Senator from Texas, a 'Fire-Eater' who advocated the preservation and expansion of an aristocratic agricultural society based on slave labor, and fought several notable duels, including with future South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks. In full: ‘I shall leave the state in two days or two weeks for the west – New Orleans probably – Should you have any fiends there do enclose me letters of introduction to them. Ask Simmons, Walker & my other friends in town if they can not procure letters for me that would be of service. Direct to me at Edgefield…’ He signs in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, with some damage to the integral cover where roughly opened, otherwise in very good condition overall. At the time of writing, Wigfall was experiencing numerous political and financial setbacks, including the failure of his law practice and damage to his reputation resulting from the aforementioned Brooks affair, which would force him to sell his estate, Edgefield, and leave the state. He would settle in Texas by 1848 and quickly return to politics there.
