Description
(1823 - 1903) Union major general blamed for the Union debacle at Fredericksburg. In 1864 while recovering from wounds he was captured by Jubal Early, but escaped. Good association A.N.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but wartime], to fellow General Philip Kearny, regarding a proposed court martial, in full: ‘Will Gen Kearny be good enough to suggest names from his Brigade for a Court. I will then recommend the Genl to order a Court. I have not the authority. If there is a scarcity of Officers for the purpose in his Brigade, I will call upon the Brig Genl of the other Brigade of the Division for names to make up the number. One Court is now in session but it will be advantageous to have another detailed to sit at the same time.’ He signs ‘W B Franklin’ at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Comg Divn’. Shows minor brushing to the ink, trimmed at the edges and mounted, otherwise in very good overall condition.
