Description
(1828 - 1862) Confederate brigadier general of cavalry in the Shenandoah, under the command of Stonewall Jackson. Killed leading an infantry charge at Harrisonburg, Va. while exhorting his men to follow. Scarce war-date partly-printed D.S. twice, 1p. 4to., Martinsburg, [ca. Feb 1, 1862], a requisition for forage for the horses of Ashby’s cavalry company. He signs in black ink at lower right, affirming that the account is correct, and adds his contemporary rank ‘Lt Col Comdg’. He signs again at bottom right, confirming that the requested supplies have been received, again adding his rank. The second signature is somewhat light, and the document shows an approx. 0.5 in hole at lower right, not affecting the signatures, with original folds showing a split repaired on the verso with cello tape, and a few stains, otherwise in very good condition overall.
