Description
(1815-1862) Union brigadier general who captured Baton Rouge, but was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest during his command’s successful defense of the city against John C. Breckenridge’s attempts to recapture it. Rare, war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., Harrisburg, PA, July [n.d.], 1861, a discharge certificate for a Pvt. Bernhard Brahler of Co. G, 9th Pennsylvania Infantry, as his term of enlistment has expired. Interestingly, the certificate was originally filled out in the name of a ‘Charles Miller’, but this name has been scratched out and replaced with Brahler’s suggesting that the latter may have been enlisted as a substitute. The company’s commanding captain, Richard A. Graeffe, signs at bottom left, with Williams countersigning ‘T. Willams’ in black ink at bottom right, with his rank ‘Maj 5th Arty’ and ‘Mustering Officer’ added in another hand. Shows folds overall with minor splits thereto, moderately soiled and with minor chips to the edge, otherwise in very good overall condition.
