(1835-1910) Confederate colonel who led the 15th Alabama Infantry in a series of assaults against Little Round Top at Gettysburg, only to be repulsed by the 20th Maine Volunteers under Col. Joshua Chamberlain. Later served as the 29th Governor of Alabama. Scarce T.L.S. ‘Wm. C. Oates’ as Alabama congressman, 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Dec. 4, 1890, to Henry Hall, business manager of the New York Tribune. Oates accepts Hall’s offer to write an article for the Tribune on the ‘Proper Functions of the Minority in Legislation’, and signs in black ink at the conclusion in black ink, adding an ink emendation in the text. Shows original mailing folds, moderately toned, otherwise in very good overall condition.
