Description
(1841 - 1910) King of Great Britain and Ireland, eldest son of Queen Victoria who because of his indiscretions was kept in the dark concerning matters of state until he succeeded to the throne following his mother's death. His reign was marked by more openness and visibility of the royal family. A.L.S. 'Albert Edward' on Marlborough House letterhead, 3pp. 8vo, London, March 27, 1870, to an unidentified correspondent ‘H. S.’, in part: ‘...I am glad you can give us rather more favourable accounts of the dear General – feel great that he may [be] preserved to you all & to us also. I dread to think the loss he will be. The Queen will have lost one of her truest & most devoted servants, & I a most kind… friend. I need hardly tell you how deeply I feel for you – Mrs Tracy & the Duchess, & should advise you to break the news of his dangerous illness – by degrees to the Duchess. I am going out hunting tomorrow but I will call in the afternoon…’ He signs in black ink at bottom right. Shows original mailing folds, faintly toned, with archival tape marks to the verso, otherwise in very good overall condition.
