Description
(1902 - 1974) American aviator who, in his 'Spirit of St. Louis', was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. His signed book 'The Wartime Journals of Charles A. Lindbergh' (New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich), 1970. 1,038pp. 8vo.. First edition in blue cloth with silver titles, covers slightly worn, a bit more so at bottom of spine, with dust wrapper which is bears a few tears and is worn at edges of spine. Signed and inscribed on the full title page 'To Samuel J. Murray with best wishes, Charles A. Lindbergh 1970'. Very good. A very controversial work by Lindbergh who outraged millions of Americans in 1939-41. The basic issue involved World War II, the diary repeatedly stresses, was the preservation of 'civilization,' defined as the comforts and attitudes of the 'Nordic,' middle-class West, against the forces of 'disorder' and 'leveling' threatening from within and without. The democracies were losing 'character', the 'virility' of Nazi Germany was the barrier against the greatest menace, the Communism of 'Asiatic' Russia. Franklin Roosevelt is pictured as a relentless schemer, distrusted by 'friend or enemy,' who was quite capable of taking the nation to war out of sheer politics and vainglory (New York Times September, 1970). Sold with a University Archives / John Reznikoff C.O.A. as well as our own.
