Description
THOMAS STEVENS (1828–1888) British 19th-century weaver in Coventry, famous for his innovation of the stevengraph, a woven silk picture. Rare collection of three A.L.S.s, 12pp. total, 8vo., Coventry, 1871. The letters are quite difficult to read but bits and pieces are legible. One letter, on Stevens' commercial letterhead, mentions making 5,000 'Portraits of Professor Morse', production schedules, etc. The other letters are similar in content, discussing making portraits of the 'candidates for president' and 'Admiral Farragut', production costs, their determination not to open an account in America, noting 'a burnt child dreads the fire', etc. Ex: Charles Hamilton. Generally very good.
