Hariti has ancient roots of maternal protection in many Eastern cultures. Originally an ogre, she was converted to maintain loving behaviour toward all children by Buddha himself. She is depicted caring for five children in this casting. Hariti is revered as the protector of women and children and the processes of childbirth and child-raising.
