In 1926, Thomas Edison's company introduced an early microgroove "Long Playing" Diamond Disc format to combat the rising popularity of commercial radio. The company issued a total of 14 different long-play records across two sizes, they were divided evenly into two separate catalog series. They took a special Edison Long Play reproducer to play them on a Edison Diamond Disc machine. The 40-minute records were a massive commercial failure due to low audio volume, severe tendencies to skip, and fragile groove walls. They were completely discontinued within two years.
