This Canadian 1-cent coin, dated 1963, is a broadstrike mint error, characterized by having been struck without the restraining collar. This production error allowed the copper planchet to expand beyond its standard diameter under the pressure of the dies, resulting in an oversized appearance and a smooth, unstamped edge. The obverse features the first laureated portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA. The reverse depicts two maple leaves on a single twig, a design by George Kruger-Gray indicated by the KG initials, accompanied by the inscriptions 1 CENT and CANADA. The coin is housed in a vintage cardboard flip with handwritten provenance and technical notes. The coin is in uncirculated condition, retaining a bright copper-red luster. Surfaces exhibit minimal handling marks and no significant abrasions. The broadstrike error is well-centered, and the peripheral expansion is uniform.
