Bereits im Jahr 1940 experimentierte Wilhelm Albert an einer Leica Kamera für 52 Aufnahmen mit einem Bildformat von 24x24mm (das genaue Format betrug 24,4x23,3 mm). Diese wurde für Zwecke der erkennungsdienstlichen Fotografie (so genanntes Bertillon Verfahren) seinerzeit an die Kriminalpolizei in Berlin geliefert. Seitdem wurde das Thema des quadratischen Bildformats von den Fotokonstrukteuren bei Leitz immer wieder aufgegriffen und in verschiedenen experimentellen Kameras und Zusatzsuchern umgesetzt.
Ungewöhnlicher Prototyp einer Leica Ic mit quadratischem Bildformat und 5-zahniger Transportwalze. Die Bildzählscheibe ist bis 60 graviert. Gravur "24x24" auf der Oberseite der Deckkappe.

As early as 1940, Wilhelm Albert was experimenting with a Leica camera for 52 exposures with an image format of 24x24 mm (the exact format was 24,4x23,3 mm). This was delivered to the criminal police in Berlin for the purposes of identification photography (the so-called Bertillon process). Since then, the topic of a square image format has been taken up again and again by the camera designers at Leitz and implemented in various experimental cameras and auxiliary finders.
