The sole child of a carpenter-violinist father and a loom-tender mother, he apprenticed as a wood engraver while taking night classes at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. In 1875–1876, he studied landscape painting under George Loring Brown in New Hampshire's White Mountains, followed by life drawing at the Lowell Institute. A scholarship brought him to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from 1876 to 1878, under directors Otto Grundmann and anatomist William Rimmer, where he honed foundational skills before launching his studio in the city.Metcalf's trajectory intertwined personal upheavals with the ascendance of American Impressionism during the Gilded Age.
