Description
This antique hanging spring scale was manufactured by John Chatillon and Sons of New York, USA. The instrument features a double-sided design with glass-covered circular dials on both faces, allowing for weight measurements to be viewed from either side. The scale housing is suspended by a metal chain and ring from a large, circular oxidized iron hoop frame. This hoop is integrated into a support stand that terminates in a circular metal base fitted with a white porcelain-enameled tray. The central dial faces are printed with the maker mark John Chatillon and Sons above New York, U.S.A. in a decorative serif font. Directly below the zero mark, the dial is labeled Capacity 30 lbs. Each dial is graduated from 0 to 9 in large Arabic numerals. Between each primary pound mark are 16 graduation marks indicating ounces, with the 8-ounce midpoint specifically marked with a small numeral 8. The cylindrical scale body includes heavy metal rings at both the top and bottom for suspension and the attachment of weighing hooks or pans. Dial is 10 in, tray is 14 inches.
