The lot contains a 1934 "K Date" manufactured Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf Army contract Luger chambered in 9x19 parabellum (9mm). The full serial number (5753) is clearly stamped on the left side of the barrel extension, front of the frame, and underside of the barrel. The takedown latch, side plate, sear, safety, trigger, lever, firing pin, breach block, front and rear toggle links, toggle retaining pin, hold open latch, loaded chamber indicator/extractor, and grip panels are all stamped with the last two digits of the serial number (53). The pistol displays all matching serial numbers except for the magazine (6157 i). The to of the barrel extension is stamped "K" which equates to 1934 production as to mislead the allied control commission tasked with upholding the treaty of Versailles, the right side of the barrel extension is stamped with the gothic S parts marking used on the first three variations of K-date Lugers, "B90" and "S91" waffenamts, and the early style firing proof. The underside of the barrel extension is stamped with an "S90" waffenamt. In addition to the full serial number stamped below, the barrel is stamped with the "S90" waffenamt on the upper left quarter, firing proof on the right side, and nominal bore diameter (8,82mm) below. The breach block is stamped with the firing proof on the left side and gothic S on the right. The firing pin is stamped with a gothic S and the firing pin spring guide is stamped with a scriptic S. The top of the toggle is marked with a gothic S on the loaded chamber indicator/extractor, gothic S and scriptic S/42 maker code (Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf) on the middle toggle link, and the coupling link is marked with a gothic S. The hold open latch, right side of trigger, and right side of magazine release are all marked with a gothic S. The takedown lever, outside of side plate, and sear bar are all marked with a gothic S. The magazine base is stamped with a later style eagle waffenamt 63. The pistol in overall very good condition retaining approximately 90%+ of its blued finish. The takedown lever, trigger, safety lever, magazine release, and ejector spring display a blued finish as well in very good condition. The bore rates 8/10 in this writer's opinion and will likely clean up better once some dust is removed. The grips are solid and in good to very good condition with no wiggle showing mild handling wear commensurate to their age. The magazine is in very good condition of blued steel construction with an aluminum base. The pistol shows very little internal wear and appears to function properly. The luger pistol was first adopted by the German army in 1908 and was produced for the army into 1942 being of a reliable and robust design only eventually phased out in favor of the P38 due to the looming materials shortages facing Germany at that point in the war. The "K" date was the first year Luger production was fully restarted for the army and the lease numerous year of WW2 Luger production (10,930 according to Jan Still's Third Reich Lugers) using a letter code instead of the later more common numerical date stamp in an attempt to deceive the allied control commission tasked to enforce the Versailles treaty. This particular pistol falls into the serial block of the third variation in K date Luger production which totaled approximately 3,850 pistols (Still) and shows the gothic S marking on all parts and scriptic S/42 maker code consistent with this particular sub-variation. The gothic S part markings were phased out in the fourth and final variation of K date Lugers. Approximately 300 K date lugers went to the Kriegsmarine (Still). Such early examples of WW2 Lugers are prized by collectors as representing such a pivotal point in world history and their high standards of fit and finish that were relaxed once war was declared.
