GERMAN WWII MAUSER "BYF/44" CODE "EAGLE/F" POLICE PROOFED DUAL-TONE P.38 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 4939. Bbl. 4 7/8". 1 of approx. 1,500 P.38 semi-automatic pistols mfg. by Mauser for the Innenministerium (Department of the Interior) in 1944, this example being listed by S# on page 232 of "The P.38 Pistol" by Alexander Krutzek. The left side of the slide is marked "P.38", followed by Mauser's mfg. code above the 2-digit year of mfg. "byf/ 44", an Eagle/N commercial nitro proof, and the S#, with a single Mauser Eagle/WaA135 proof and a large Eagle/F police proof marked on the right. Eagle/WaA135 is repeated on the left side of the frame, as well as on the left side of the bbl. and right side of the locking block. Eagle/N commercial nitro proof is repeated on the left side of the bbl. and locking block. Underside of bbl. is properly marked with the bore diameter "8.83". Frame, frame small parts, and slide exhibit a phosphate finish, with the bbl. exhibiting a blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved black Polyamid 6 grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and U-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching, to include the frame, slide, bbl., and locking block. MAGS: x1 phosphate finished steel 8-rd. marked "jvd" (left) and "P38/ U" (right). CONDITION: phosphate parts are very good, exhibiting some light edge wear and a few superficial handling marks, with scattered spots of age related discoloration. Front grip strap shows some light thinning. Bbl. retains the vast majority of its original blue finish, exhibiting some light edge wear and thinning. Brilliant mirror bore, retaining sharp and well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics, to include the safety / decocking lever. Grips show a few minor superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain very good overall. An exceptional example of a seldom encountered Mauser P.38 variation that would prove to be difficult to upgrade from. (26-2731/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
