Description
Dimensions: Overall height 19 cm (7.48 inches), mouth diameter 10 cm (3.94 inches)FormModelled after archaic bronze gu ritual vessels. It features a widely flared trumpet mouth, a constricted mid-section decorated with multiple raised concentric string grooves, a flared lower belly and an outward-spreading ring foot. The silhouette boasts balanced, graceful contours with harmonious proportions. The gu form originated from bronze ritual wares of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. During the Song Dynasty, the vogue for archaism flourished, rendering gu vases important ceremonial and hall display wares of far higher rank than utilitarian porcelain, cherished as premium ornamental pieces for scholar studies.ConditionThe main body remains intact. There is an old restoration on the rim and a minor chip repair at the foot edge. No penetrating cracks or hidden fissures run through the vessel; the rest of the glaze and body are well preserved.II. Kiln Identification, Clay Body & Glaze CraftsmanshipKiln AnalysisThis piece is presumed to be a celadon ritual vessel fired at the core Dayao production zone of Southern Song Longquan kilns. Longquan kilns reached the pinnacle of celadon production across the Northern and Southern Song eras. At that time, the imperial court and literati-officials highly valued archaistic ritual wares. Gu vases, exclusive high-end vessels for display and sacrifice, were produced in limited quantities, and intact surviving specimens circulating among collectors are rare.Distinct from commonplace utilitarian Longquan wares such as bowls and plates, archaistic ritual vessels required premium raw materials and complicated segmented assembly forming techniques. Complete surviving examples of this type are scarce and rank highly among collectibles.Clay Body TraitsThe vessel is crafted from characteristic thick greyish-white clay exclusive to Longquan kilns, featuring dense, solid texture with substantial heft. The ring foot base is neatly trimmed, and the exposed foot edge bears an even natural band of firestone red patina. The clay matrix is fine and free of coarse grit impurities, consistent with standard clay characteristics of top-tier Song Longquan celadon.Glaze Tone & Crackle CraftsmanshipThe entire vessel is fully coated in rich, velvety thick pink celadon glaze. The plump glaze presents a soft, uniform lake-green hue with prominent jade-like texture and subtle, restrained luster. Delicate natural ice crackles spread across both interior and exterior surfaces, formed gradually over centuries of ageing with soft, translucent layered patterns, free of artificially induced crackle treatment.Glaze application is uniform and thorough; glaze is only chipped away at the bottom edge of the ring foot to expose raw clay. The glaze flows naturally down the vessel body, thinning to a pale off-white tone along the rim and raised string grooves with gentle seamless gradients, fully conforming to the pad-firing and thick-glaze production standards of Song Longquan kilns.III. ConditionThe main body bears no penetrating cracks, hidden fissures or large-scale chipping damage. Only one small aged repair exists on the upper rim and one minor chip mending at the foot edge; both restorations date back to ancient circulation, with minimal repaired areas that do not compromise the vessel’s overall ornamental effect. The original pink celadon glaze remains intact all over the surface, paired with naturally formed antique crackles and a distinct well-preserved firestone red foot ring. There is no extensive glaze peeling, glaze loss or later grinding abrasion, endowing the piece with excellent display and collection value.
