Provenance and Authentication:
According to the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided by the consignor, this collectible was subjected to a forensic examination. The accompanying documentation states that the signatures were evaluated with reference to multiple characteristics, including ink deposition, material and aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical context. Based on the examination described in these documents, the authentication provider concluded that the findings were consistent with the attributed signatures. The LOA and COA provided by the consignor accompany the lot.

A signed figure drawing by Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962), depicting a young girl wearing a tall black hat and dark cloak-like costume. Executed with ink and watercolor, the composition combines loosely articulated outlines with washes of gray and black and restrained touches of warm color to the cheeks, hat, and shoes.

The figure displays many of the visual qualities closely associated with Bemelmans's celebrated illustration work: simplified anatomy, economical facial features, deliberately irregular contours, and a spontaneous combination of drawing and transparent color. The small scale of the figure and generous surrounding negative space further enhance the whimsical, storybook character of the composition.

The work is signed "Bemelmans" at lower right. The autograph is rendered in a fluid, abbreviated cursive form, with compressed letter construction, continuous lateral movement, and a naturally tapering terminal stroke. These characteristics correspond with the loose and economical signing manner associated with Bemelmans's drawings and illustrated material.

Best known as the creator and illustrator of the beloved Madeline books, Bemelmans developed one of the most immediately recognizable visual languages in twentieth-century children's literature. Signed drawings combining his distinctive linework and watercolor technique remain particularly appealing to collectors of illustration, children's literature, and twentieth-century works on paper.
