Description
This striking, monumental piece is a classic example of late 19th-century Victorian craftsmanship, likely serving originally as a specialized library bookcase or a post office/clerk's cabinet. Crafted from rich walnut, the upper section features deep, open display shelving crowned by an impressive architectural cornice with an elegant arched corbel motif and recessed arch side panels. The lower cabinet breaks away from standard designs, opening to reveal a beautifully preserved, integrated wooden mail sorter or document cubby system with 27 compartments and curved dividers, all resting above a deeply carved, scrolled apron. Included in this lot are the two massive, original arched glass-panel doors which have been removed for transport but are fully present. A functional lock mechanism is intact, complete with the original key that services both the lower folding door and the upper glass doors. The piece shows typical surface wear consistent with age, including light scuffs, minor scratches, and dust from storage, but remains structurally sound and retains a beautiful antique patina. H 96", W 54", D 16". Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available Post-Auction.
