Description
French style theatrical or costume cuirass, 19th century. Comprising a breastplate and backplate of shaped steel construction. The breastplate is formed with a pronounced central ridge, scalloped lower edge with brass tone rivets, and red textile lining visible to the interior. The backplate is similarly shaped with raised central ridge and flared lower edge. Cuirasses were worn as torso armor to protect the chest and back, though this example appears intended for costume, theatrical, ceremonial, or decorative use rather than battlefield service.
