Description
Early 19th Century American Federal Giltwood Convex Bullseye Eagle Mirror
A striking, highly collectible example of early American Federal craftsmanship. This antique bullseye wall mirror features a boldly hand-carved giltwood frame crowned with a majestic spread-wing American eagle. The circular frame is punctuated by 13 iconic, evenly spaced gilded spheres representing the original 13 colonies, set above an elaborate bottom pendant showcasing a classical anthemion palmette flanked by acanthus foliate scrolls.
The original convex glass plate remains intact, elegantly offering the characteristic fisheye compression that maximizes depth and light reflection in any room. Built using time-honored 19th-century methods, the frame consists of hand-cut, segmented wood blocks layered with a traditional gesso foundation and authentic water-gilded gold leaf. The back panel shows rich, natural wood oxidation developed over nearly two centuries.
An exceptional statement piece with deep historical resonance, perfect for grounding an entryway, mantle, or dining room display.
