Description
Michael Schunke Nine Iron Studios Hand-Blown Flat Art Glass Pitchers - Set of 3
Circa 2000-2007
Three jewel-colored pitchers by Pennsylvania glass artist Michael Schunke of Nine Iron Studios bring pure color and a playful, sculptural line to any room. Each is hand-blown in a single transparent color, amethyst, topaz, and olive green, and then pressed into a flattened disc so that it looks like a full moon of glass from the front and a slim sliver from the side. A slender neck sweeps up into a long, curving spout, and a looped handle with a little curled tail is applied in a contrasting color: lime green on the amethyst, cobalt blue on the olive, and cranberry red on the topaz. A collar band and a short pad foot in yet another color are shot through with gold leaf, so that each pitcher seems to float above the table on a shimmering base.
These are the studio's "Flat Transparent Pitchers," and they are as happy grouped together as they are scattered through a house. Line all three up on a console or a mantel where the light comes through them, stand one on a bar cart or a kitchen island as a color note, or use a single pitcher in a bookcase or on a windowsill where it can catch the afternoon sun. They work equally well against a crisp white wall in a modern interior or among older pieces, where the saturated color reads as a deliberate jolt.
Michael Schunke trained in Venetian glassblowing techniques at the Rhode Island School of Design, founded Nine Iron Studios in West Grove, Pennsylvania, in the 1990s, and now works with Josie Gluck as Vetro Vero. His glass is in the collections of the Toledo Museum of Art, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and museums abroad. Each pitcher is engraved Nine Iron Studios on the lower body.
