Description
This powerful and thought-provoking framed block print titled "60s Redux / Movement" was hand-pulled by Herbert Simon in 2011. Marked as a rare Artist's Proof (AP), this large-scale multi-panel print stands as a compelling late-career testament to Simon's engagement with graphic expression and social themes.
The composition utilizes a striking split-block format to explore the concept of collective human momentum. The left panel features an energetic, high-contrast black-and-white rendering of figures in physical collision and motion, channeling the raw energy of collective action. The right panel shifts to a calming yet stark teal block, depicting a ship navigating highly structured, geometric waves under a cross-hatched sun. Created during the global protest movements of 2011, the piece serves as an intellectual commentary, linking contemporary unrest to the historic civil movements of the 1960s.
The lower margin is hand-annotated in graphite by the artist. It features the title on the left ("'60s Redux / Movement"), the edition designation in the center ("AP"), and is hand-signed and dated on the right with the traditional printmaker's mark: "imp. H B Simon 2011", confirming that Simon personally hand-inked and pulled this impression in his studio. It comes professionally housed in a sleek silver-toned gallery frame with a clean white mat.
About the artist: Herbert Simon (b. 1927) is an American sculptor and printmaker who taught in the art department at Wilkes University from 1969-1992. A student of Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, and Philip Guston, his work bridges the New York School and academic structuralism. His monumental public commissions are permanently installed at major regional landmarks, including the 'Facets' aluminum installation at Wilkes University, the 'Aloft' sculpture at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and civic plazas across Pennsylvania. This piece was consigned by the artist and acquired through a local auction house.
