First published in 2006 under the title Travesuras de la niña mala, this novel tells the story of Ricardo Somocurcio and his ongoing albeit fleeting romance with the eponymous "bad girl," whom he first meets as "Lily" in Peru. Ricardo continues to meet Lily, who reappears in his life disguised by various aliases and false personas, and he continues to love her throughout his life and travels. In many ways, The Bad Girl is Vargas Llosa's iteration of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Notably, Vargas Llosa was a life-long fan of Flaubert's writing. Indeed, this novel's femme fatale's third identity is Mme. Arnoux, which is also the name of Frederic Moreau's love interest in Flaubert's Sentimental Education.
