The seashell was most associated Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love who was born of the sea. Recall the famous Renaissance painting by Sandro Botticelli - "The Birth of Venus" (ca. 1486) depicting the goddess approaching the shore after her birth, emerging as a statuesque nude beauty upon a large seashell.
