Karl Schenker (1886-1954) was a master of photographing women and was dubbed as the “born portraitist of elegant people,” “a master of several mediums” and “stage director of women’s heads”. Even within conservative notions in the early 1900’s, Schenker could take nude photographs of respectable ladies without losing elegance. Highly influenced by the Pictorialist movement, Schenker could retouch his photographs and make his subjects as flawless as mannequins. In the 1910s and 20s, everybody who was anybody in Berlin was photographed by Karl Schenker. ” A master in the art of retouching photographs, Schenker’s flawless, gauzy portraits of young women in furs and tulle set the standard for the female “type” of the silent film era. After 14 years in Berlin, Schenker and his second wife Lilli moved to New York where they lived for five years. During this time he changed his name to Karol Schenker and devoted himself to illustration and painting. No photographs are known to exist from 1925 to 1930. In 1930, Schenker returned to Berlin where had great success as a fashion photographer.
