Lot 0178
TITLE OF THE MAP: 'Isles de Salomon'
Many early cartographers of the southern hemisphere believed that there was a great southern continent "Terra Australis", which was believed to extend significantly further north than the actual landmass of Antarctica, and possibly to include the island now known as Australia. One proponent of this theory was Spanish explorer Pedro Fernandez de Quir, or Quiros as he is more often known Quiros. He believed that he had discovered this southern continent; claims which were reflected in some early maps of the region as "Terre de Quir" or similar.
