⁂ 'The first notice in English of the Physiocratic doctrine' (Higgs). An important work that introduced English readers to the Journal Oeconomique; the key work of the Physiocratic movement. The group of Physiocrat economists believed that the wealth of nations was solely derived from the value of agriculture or land-development. Accordingly over half of the essays selected by Smollett for translation from the original French publication concern agriculture in various forms.
