AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF MONASTIC SAINTS, CIRCA 1890. Finely painted, the two saints holding an icon of the Kaluga Mother of God, and above a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. The saint on the left holding an axe is identified by his inscription as the Holy Righteous Fool for Christ's Sake Lavrentiy of Kaluga and the saint depicted at right is identified as the Venerable Tikhon of Kaluga. In the background, a rendering of the St. Tikhon Monastery from which the offered icon was likely originally acquired by a pilgrim. The borders incised and decorated in faux cloisonné enamel. 7 inches x 5.5 inches (17.5 x 14 cm).

In 1512 the city of Kaluga was attacked by Crimean Tatars, and Prince Simeon went out to defend the city. Lavrentiy grabbed an axe and when he took part in the battle, the Tatars were defeated. The victory was attributed "miraculously" to Lavrentiy and his axe.
