73. The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter's personal copy specially bound for the First Warne Edition, with presentation inscription by Beatrix Potter. Potter, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. London: Frederick Warne & Co., [1902]. 16mo. Specially bound copy of the First Warne Edition, made for Beatrix Potter. With "wept big tears" on page 51 and other first issue points and an inscription detailing the history of this unique binding: "To 'Princess' Eileen on Peace Day Brougham Aug 23, 1919 From the authoress – with love from Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter". This volume is one of two, which were specially bound. The other copy was presented 15 years ago to a little Prince sometime known as 'David'". This unique binding was made exclusively for Beatrix Potter using materials from her family's tannery and was her personal copy for 17 years before giving it away on this momentous occasion. She inscribed it for Eileen Brougham (b. 1912), grand-daughter of the 3rd Baron Brougham. At the time of the book's signing, Beatrix Potter lived at Castle Farm, Sawrey, and was familiar to the Brougham children as a regular tea-time visitor. The Brougham Peace Day formed part of the nationwide celebrations following the First World War and the village held a pageant and other festivities led by the seven year-old Eileen Brougham who had been nominated "Princess" for the day. The 'little Prince – sometimes known as "David" of the inscription was the future Edward VIII (b. 1894). $80,000 – $120,000
