Description
Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Wanli blue & white dragon motif porcelain hexagonal lidded jar. Stoutly potted Chinese porcelain unto a hexagonal flat lidded jar, slight tall and deep, with rounded wide cavetto, correspondence dome lid, raised from hexagonal sides over a wide cavetto Inner flange circumscribed around the containers lip allows for a perfect fitment of the covering, with hexagonal form lip, and the dome with finial bud. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white under glaze base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color. The dome lid adorned with hexagonal medallion describe of snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds in a dark blue color dragon squama to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames and vapor, enclosed with repeating interlocking key fret on the mouth lip. The exterior belly decorated with snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds in a dark blue color dragon squama to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames and vapor, enclosed with double fine rings. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the under glaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.


Mark on under base, a vertical six under glazed blue script characters reign mark, enclosed within double fine rings, Wanli Reign Period of Great Ming Dynasty.
