This is an Original Marc Chagall Etching named "Oiseau et Homme". The plate size is 11 5/8" x 15 1/8, signed in the lower left of the plate. It's also numbered "20" countering the signature. It depicts a bearded man reaching for an egret; both are floating in the air above a landscape. The ground line of the landscape gives the appearance that the work should be horizontal rather than vertical; however, Chagall's signature in the plate and in the lower right corner confirm the vertical orientation of the composition. This print has only appeared for auction only once in the past three decades. Chagall was born in Russia and active in France, he was best known for his whimsical paintings, drawings and prints of Russian peasant life, colorful Old Testament subjects, and scenes of Jewish life.
