Item Details
Description
Marilyn Monroe 1951 screen and publicity worn custom one-piece bathing suit as "Joyce Mannering" in Let's Make it Legal. (20th Century-Fox, 1951) Black and gold-metallic jacquard one-piece bathing suit with internal stretch-warp sateen insert by Renie (working under Charles LeMaire) and elaborate fully-wired internal flesh-tone nylon and pink taffeta brassiere, adapted by Renie from a Helene of Hollywood original. Bears the following identifiers: 20th Century-Fox wardrobe label sewn onto bra strap; Helene of Hollywood size C-34 label sewn into bra strap; and "M. MONROE" printed in fountain pen on internal stabilizing strap. This exact suit not only was worn prominently by Marilyn in her 1951 film Let's Make it Legal, Fox also exploited her in this suit for extensive general publicity, including the full-color back cover of Pageant magazine, March 1952, which declares Marilyn to be "The hottest thing in Hollywood since Jean Harlow". Up to this moment in her career, Marilyn played ingénue characters, on the sexy yet still naive side, but this film role in this particular suit is one of the earliest to focus so specifically on her cheesecake and glamour girl qualities. Bathing suit is of an exceedingly elaborate and sturdy hand construction as seen only from top designers for film studio work. Apart from a single tiny wear-hole in the middle-back and slight internal soiling from Marilyn's use, the suit is in a remarkable state of preservation, Very Fine.
