Indy 500 3-time champion Johnny Rutherford cleared out his lifetime collection at Kraft

Team McLaren Indianapolis Motor Speedway Gasoline Alley #84-86 garage doors used by Johnny Rutherford in three victories, which sold for $33,000 ($39,600 with buyer's premium) at Kraft.

VALPARAISOInd. — Kraft Auction Service is marking 47 years in business in 2024 with a string of themed sales, all identified as being part of the ’47th Anniversary’ series. Its February 2 auction was packed with racing memorabilia, drawn from some of the most famous names in motorsports. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Johnny Rutherford (b. 1938-) started his career like most, racing stock cars on dirt tracks on Saturday nights. But his talent delivered him to heights not imaginable, ultimately leading to a career with three Indianapolis 500 victories, a CART championship, and 27 total wins across more than 300 starts. Rutherford chose Kraft to bring many items from his lifetime collection to market, and two key lots wildly overperformed.

Rutherford’s third and final Indy 500 win came in 1980, and as was the tradition, as part of his victory, he was awarded that year’s pace car. For 1980, it was the Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans-Am, decorated with Indy 500 year-specific decals and other visual differentiators from stock Trans-Ams. Since that time, the Pontiac has covered only 2,400 miles, making it essentially fresh off the lot. It was sold with the understanding that extensive work would be required to make it roadworthy, but bidders did not care. The car hammered at $80,000 ($96,000 with buyer’s premium) after dozens of bids.

More spectacular still were Rutherford’s Gasoline Alley wooden garage doors from stall #84-86 — which he used for all three of his Indianapolis 500 victories. Rutherford joined the McLaren racing team in 1973 using this garage and got immediate results, finishing 9th overall. In 1974, he notched his first victory, then again in 1976, and in 1980 for his third and final win. Each time, his car would pass through these doors, so when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway decided to demolish the old garages in 1985, Rutherford stepped up and asked for the doors from #84-86, and here they are. They hammered for an amazing $33,000 ($39,600 with buyer’s premium) and will be a legendary feature in some racing fan’s collection.

Morean brings ‘holy grail’ Perone Beer cone-top can to market Feb. 25

Play Mate Malt Liquor zip-top can, estimated at $250-$250,000 at Morean Auctions.

BRIMFIELD, Mass. — Dan Morean returns on Sunday, February 25 with a nearly 600-lot breweriana sale dominated by vintage cans of all types and advertising, much of it highly rare to occasionally unique. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the sale is a Perone Beer quart cone-top can described in the lot notes as a “grail” item for both quart and Pennsylvania brewery collectors. Made in the 1940s by the Otto Erlanger Brewing Co. of Philadelphia, it is the only known example in this size and can type, and is expected to perform well. All lots in the sale carry a $250-$250,000 estimate, so the value will be revealed in a few days’ time.

A tin-lithographed sign for York Brewing Co. in York, Pennsylvania is only the second example ever encountered by Morean Auctions. Measuring 20 by 29in in height, the sign has only minor imperfections despite its advanced age.

Another early bidding favorite is Play Mate Malt Liquor, a 1960s zip-top 12-ounce can from Sunshine Brewing Co. of Reading, Pennsylvania. Terrific graphics and very good overall condition mark it as a lot to watch in the sale.

Grace Bros. Brewing Co. of Santa Rosa, California is long forgotten now, but its Clipper Pale Beer lives on through this terrific graphic can depicting a PanAm Clipper seaplane over a vast ocean. Always popular with bidders, the can is another anticipated top performer.

It seems as if ‘clipper’ was a fairly popular term for beer brands during the prewar period, as this Clipper Ale illuminated sign demonstrates. Marked Harvard Brewing Co., Lowell, Mass., the sign is one of only two that experts at Morean have seen.

1969 Woodstock concert program leads our five lots to watch

An original 1969 Woodstock concert program, estimated at $500-$900 at Crescent City Auction Gallery.

1969 Woodstock Concert Program

NEW ORLEANS – The three-day rock concert staged in 1969 in Woodstock, New York is a revered event on the timeline of the eternal Baby Boomer. Most of their generation’s biggest names participated, a film was released to great acclaim, and untold ink has been spilled singing its praises.

Though the film depicts the concert as somewhat chaotic and disorganized, the actual event promoters did manage to get most of the massive production done correctly, even down to mundane details such as creating a 58-page concert program. Largely filled with record label advertisements for acts appearing at Woodstock, the program has been reissued and reprinted for more than 50 years.

This original Woodstock program can be easily identified by the position of the ‘3 days of peace & music’ headline on the cover; on the original, certain letters are difficult to read due to their overprinting position against a field of flowers. Later editions added backshadowing to increase legibility.

Many original programs routinely appear online with four-digit asking prices. Crescent City Auction Gallery rates this copy as being in pristine condition, and has assigned a modest $500-$900 estimate. The program will come up for bid on Friday, March 1 as part of its Winter Decorative Arts & Interiors sale.

Hiroshige ‘Large Fish Series’ Woodblock Prints

Complete album of 20 woodblock prints from Utagawa Hiroshige’s circa-1860 ‘Large Fish Series’, estimated at $10,000-$15,000 at Merrill’s.
Complete album of 20 woodblock prints from Utagawa Hiroshige’s circa-1860 ‘Large Fish Series’, estimated at $10,000-$15,000 at Merrill’s.

WILLISTON, Vt. – The descendants of Captain Charles A. Ranlett, Sr. continue to disperse his collection at auction at Merrill’s. In December, a small trove of letters sent by Ranlett to his children from China during the Second Opium War sold for $8,820. On Friday, February 23, Merrill’s will present Ranlett’s intact copy of Utagawa Hiroshige’s ‘Large Fish Series’ collection of 20 woodblock prints. Known as ukiyo-e art, Hiroshige (1797-1858) is considered the final master of the form, as it went into decline after his passing.

The collection of prints is circa 1860, and is inscribed ‘Capt. Ranlett w compliments of H O A Blake, Japan 1862.’ At the time, Ranlett was skipper of the Surprise, a fast clipper ship serving the Asian trade routes. The Ranlett copy of ‘Large Fish Series’ is in excellent condition and measures 10 by 7.25in. Merrill’s has placed a $10,000-$15,000 estimate on the work.

Two-volume Signed and Numbered Set of Theodore Roosevelt’s ‘African Game Trails’

Two-volume set of ‘African Game Trails’ by Theodore Roosevelt, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 at Vero Beach Auction.
Two-volume set of ‘African Game Trails’ by Theodore Roosevelt, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 at Vero Beach Auction.

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Having just completed his two-term presidency, Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) felt the call of the wild pulling him back to what he loved most: being a naturalist and an adventure-seeker. Fortunately, the Smithsonian Institution was looking to add to its collection of large and small African fauna, and Roosevelt – accompanied by his son Kermit – answered the call.

The two Roosevelts spent a year traversing Africa, hunting and trapping animals of all sorts. The entire affair was preserved in African Game Trails, An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturist. Written by Theodore Roosevelt, with illustrations created by popular sporting artist Philip Goodwin, the set was limited to 500 signed and numbered copies.

Vero Beach Auction has number 28 available for bidding now in its Saturday, March 2 Multi Estate Antiques & Fine Art Auction. The first volume’s cover has detached and there is foxing throughout, but for a genuine De Vinne Press edition printed by Charles Scrivner’s Sons, it carries a very modest $2,000-$3,000 estimate.

Stephan Robin Gladiola Concrete Sculpture

Stephen Robin, ‘Orchid,’ estimated at $3,000-$6,000 at B. S. Slosberg.
Stephen Robin, ‘Orchid,’ estimated at $3,000-$6,000 at B. S. Slosberg.

PHILADELPHIA – As a sculptor, Stephen Robin (1944-2018) worked in a variety of materials, including concrete, plaster, aluminum, stone, cast iron, and bronze during his lengthy career. B. S. Slosberg is offering the remaining items from his collection in an event that will be held in the artist’s studio on Tuesday, February 27.

Robin’s career spanned all sorts of creative styles, with an emphasis on creating public works of art commissioned for public and governmental buildings, such as the United States Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey, and Tampa International Airport. Much of what remains in his collection consists of gypsum– and cement-cast items. The 174-lot sale also includes framed sketches for Robin’s prominent works and a number of unfinished items, mostly in gypsum, seemingly waiting for the artist to return.

The sheer variety of styles that Robin worked in is astounding and reflects a great talent. Many of the pieces are estimated very sensibly, in an obvious nod to clear the studio, representing great opportunities for collectors.

One of the top-estimated items in the sale is a garden sculpture of an orchid. Measuring 62in in height and 36in in diameter, this monumental rendering is from Robin’s Garden Series and is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

Nineteenth-century Gothic Revival Church Stained Glass Collection

Five late 19 th-century stained glass windows removed from churches, all individually estimated at $1,000-$2,000 at Schmidt’s.
Five late 19 th-century stained glass windows removed from churches, all individually estimated at $1,000-$2,000 at Schmidt’s.

YPSILANTI, Mich. – More than 30 19th-century stained glass windows, most removed from churches, come to market at Schmidt’s Auction on Saturday, March 2.

Clearly the passion of an unknown collector, there are five panels that stand out, belonging to the Gothic Revival school dominant in the late 19th century. All have minor imperfections or repairs but are generally in good, presentable condition for their age.

Our Lady of Charity is a multi-color stained and leaded glass panel with reverse painted detail depicting imperiled sailors praying to the Holy Mother and Child. It measures 23 by 32in and is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Mary’s Promise to St. Simon is a multi-color stained and leaded glass panel with reverse painted detail depicting St. Simon receiving the scapular from the Madonna and Child. It spans 24 by 37.75in, and has an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is another multi-color stained and leaded glass panel with reverse painted detail, this depicting a young Virgin Mary being presented by her mother to a high priest in the Temple of Jerusalem. Measuring 19 by 28.5in, it, too, is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

The Resurrection is a multi-color stained and leaded glass panel with reverse painted detail that shows a radiant resurrected Christ appearing to his mother the Virgin. It measures 22.5 by 33.75in and has a $1,000-$2,000 estimate.

The Ten Commandments is another multi-color stained and leaded glass panel with reverse painted detail, portraying Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God. Spanning 20.25 by 34.25in, it, like the others, is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

NEW YORK — The unmistakable hipness of mid-century Modern design is the central element in Jasper52‘s upcoming Midcentury Modern Decorative Art and Design, beginning at 8 pm Eastern time on Tuesday, February 27, exclusively at LiveAuctioneers.

First up is a 1991 extendable dining table in cherry and wenge woods by Spanish designer Oscar Tosquets Blanca (b. 1941-) for Driade Aleph. His aim was to create a table that could be easily extended with storable extension panels, with legs that don’t get in the way of the people sitting, and with a curvature that facilitates communication — all of which he perfectly nailed in this beautiful and ingenious design. The table is estimated at $9,000-$11,000.

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) wanted a new bookshelf for his Rio Marin home in Venice, Italy. His design was the legendary Model 795 bookcase as manufactured by Bernini. The design looks as fresh as it did in 1935, and it retains the charm and elegance of artisan furniture by a master of Italian architecture. The bookcase carries an estimate of $16,000-$19,000.

Ron Arad (b. 1951-) is a British-Israeli designer who debuted his Big Easy collection with a steel chair in 1988 and has since been translated into other forms. The Soft Big Easy chair takes that core design to its logical and most comfortable conclusion. A true eye catcher, the Soft Big Easy chair went into production by Moroso in 1991; this particular piece is from 1999. It has an internal steel frame, injected flame retardant foam, and a bright red upholstery. It is estimated at $3,500-$4,000.

STUDIO CITY, Calif. — More than 800 lots of theme park and studio animation artifacts from 100 years of Disney history return to Van Eaton Galleries in its first sale of 2024, slated for Saturday, March 2. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Mary Blair (1911-1978) was an early woman animation pioneer, working at MGM, Ub Iwerks, and ultimately Walt Disney Productions, where she served as a concept artist helping to capture the ‘right look’ for both animated features as well as the later theme park displays. Van Eaton has four of her original concept paintings, including the design for the It’s A Small World attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The acrylic on board measures 20 by 15in and is dated to 1965. It carries an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

More than 70 original production animation cels are included in the sale. The top-estimated lot of this group is a matched set of Tramp and Lady from the memorable Bella Notte sequence of Walt Disney’s 1955 release Lady and the Tramp. Originally sold at the Art Corner in Disneyland, they have been trimmed and professionally restored and are together estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

First opened in 1969, Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion provides a chillingly fun experience from the moment the ride begins. This ‘stretching’ portrait is an original artwork painted by Disney Imagineer Marc Davis, where the first third is visible and the remainder reveals as the elevator descends to the ride cart platform below ground level. Highly prized by Disneyland collectors, this original is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

Original audio-animatronic birds from Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room, which first opened in 1963, are exceedingly rare. This example has been restored to full operational order by Disney artisan Kevin Kidney, and it is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Production drawings are a great entry-level area for Disney collectors, and this sale has some from Disney’s earliest days. 1928’s Steamboat Willie was the animated short that transformed Disney from a small independent studio into the entertainment monolith it is today. This original production drawing from the short is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.
