ATLANTA – Items from the Atlanta home of entertainment attorney Joel A. Katz, more than 550 lots in all, will come up for bid in an unreserved auction planned for Thursday, January 12 by Ahlers & Ogletree. The BBC celebrates 100 years of shaping pop culture

NEW YORK — In the century since its official founding on October 18, 1922, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has documented scores of historical moments, from the 1982 Falklands war to the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey. There have been royal weddings that riveted audiences locally and around the world as well as news stories on the changing face of Ireland and Scotland. Along the way, the BBC moved from exclusively broadcasting via radio to the world of television and, later, online entertainment. It has helped shape the culture with important early appearances by The Beatles and The Who to popular TV shows such as Fawlty Towers (which served as this writer’s introduction to BBC programming while growing up in New Jersey) and Doctor Who, which debuted more than 60 years ago and is going strong in its second incarnation.

Heritage sales exceed $1B in 2021 – a first for the Dallas-based auction house

DALLAS – Heritage Auctions recorded $1.4 billion in sales in 2021, marking the first time in its 45-year history the Dallas-based auction house has surpassed the billion-dollar mark. Heritage also set numerous auction world records during the past year, including ones for the world’s most valuable comic book, J.C. Leyendecker painting, video game, Michael Jordan jersey, Peanuts artwork, hockey trading card and Harry Potter book. And it did not take a magic wand to reach this extraordinary benchmark.

The 237-lot lineup spans the 1960s to the present, and includes selections such as a 1966 Chet Helms and Wes Wilson lithograph design for a King Kong Memorial Dance; a 1967 poster published by Bill Graham touting a San Francisco appearance by the Byrds, Electric Flag, and B.B. King; a 1969 black-and-white Rolling Stones concert poster; a 1970 lithograph advertising a double bill of Elton John and the Kinks; a poster for a 1969 show at the Fillmore West with Santana as the main act; and a 1999 poster for a Counting Crows performance in San Francisco presented by Bill Graham. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

DALLAS  – It was the auction that made headlines throughout the weekend, as Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay announced Saturday it was he who purchased Elton John’s touring Steinway during the second day of Heritage Auctions’ July 16-18 Entertainment & Music Memorabilia event. “Just added to the collection,” he tweeted of the $915,000 purchase, which traveled with Elton John from the mid-1970s until the ’90s.
