Description

Lincoln & Grant Pair of CDVs

A collection of two cartes-de-visite featuring Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, and Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States. Lincoln and Grant had a mutual respect and trust that grew deeper over the final year of the Civil War. Their partnership is said to have saved the Union.

Comprised of:

1) Abraham Lincoln Assassination Memorial CDV, 2.375" x 4", circa 1865. A black oval mourning border has been added to the President's image, which is surrounded by decorative embossing. Verso is not backstamped. Adhesive residue at verso; scattered foxing; minor soiling; else, very good to near fine.

Standing at attention next to Lincoln’s coffin inside the White House, Grant mourned the loss of his friend, “My personal relations with him were as close and intimate as the nature of our respective duties would permit. To know him personally was to love and respect him for his great qualities of heart and head, and for his patience and patriotism.”

2) Ulysses S. Grant CDV Portrait by Mathew Brady, 2.375" x 3.875", circa 1863. The sepia photograph is encased in an elaborate patriotic oval embossing highlighting an American eagle at the top. Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries backstamp to verso. Light foxing; minor soiling; else, very good to near fine.

In 1863, after leading the Union Army to victory at Vicksburg, Grant caught President Lincoln’s attention. But shortly after Grant's two-day battle at Shiloh, many wanted Grant removed from his command. Lincoln fended off demands for his removal by saying, “I can’t spare this man - he fights.”
