Dort verso mit altem Etikett, mit typographischen Werks- und handschriftlichen Provenienzangaben sowie einem weiteren, alten Etikett, dort bezeichnet "176". - Entlang der Kanten punktuell mit leichtem Farbabrieb als Spur der Rahmung. Partiell kaum merkliche, altersbedingte Schwindrisse. Gefirnisst. Insgesamt sehr gut. Klassisches Dreiviertel- und Brustportrait eines Gelehrten, mit seinem Buch als Attribut in der Hand.Provenienz: - Berliner Privatbesitz. - Lempertz Auktion 85, Mai 1905, Los 144. - In altmeisterlicher Manier zeigt sich uns ein Gelehrter von hohem Rang. Repräsentativ in schwarzer Robe mit breiter, prachtvoller Halskrause war er vermutlich im Auftrag für ein Adels- oder Königshaus tätig. Sein Renommee und Wissen vermitteln sich durch sein Gelehrtenbuch sowie das Wappen oben rechts, aber auch durch seinen selbstbewussten, in sich ruhenden Blick. Der Gelehrte ist zum Zeitpunkt des Portraits 66 Jahre alt, im Jahre 1618, wie der latenischen Bezeichnung zu entnehmen ist. Malerisch ist das Portrait eines Monogrammisten von kraftvoller und überzeugender Plastizität und stammt vermutlich von einem Vertreter der niederländischen Schule. Auch die Lichtführung ist ausgereift und setzt ihn versiert in Szene. Im Gesamteindruck ergibt sich ein äußerst stimmiges Portrait mit starkem Repräsentations- und Öffentlichkeitscharakter.Oil on wood. Framed in a golden frame with floral decoration. Partially barely noticeable, age-related shrinkage cracks. Varnished. Very good overall. Classic three-quarter and bust portrait of a scholar holding his book as an attribute. - Provenance: - Berlin private collection. - Lempertz Auction 85, May 1905, lot 140. - A scholar of high rank in the manner of the Old Masters is being shown. Representative in a black robe with a broad, splendid ruff, he was presumably commissioned by a noble or royal family. His reputation and knowledge are conveyed by his scholarly book and the coat of arms at the top right but also by his self-confident, introspective gaze. The scholar was 66 years old at the time of the portrait, in 1618, as mentioned by the indication in Latin. In terms of painting, the portrait of a monogramist is of powerful and convincing plasticity and was probably created by a representative of the Dutch school. The lighting is also mature and skilfully stages the scholar. The overall impression is an extremely harmonious portrait with a strong representational and public character.600
