Description
Grant Ulysses
U.S. Grant DS as President Pardoning Liquor Tax Evader
1p document signed by 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1895) as "U.S. Grant" near lower right. Signed in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 1875. On a single sheet of partly printed and partly handwritten paper. Expected paper folds, a horizontal line affecting the "t" of "Grant". The document is currently adhered to a larger sheet of paper in two isolated spots (the left and bottom margins), but it could easily be removed by a professional. Else near fine. 7.75" x 9.875".
"I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Taylor Riley,
-----------------------------------
dated this day and signed by me, and for so doing this shall be his warrant.
[signed] U.S. Grant
Washington, 11th August 1875."
President Grant pardoned, commuted, or rescinded the sentences of over 1,330 individuals including our offender, Taylor Riley, during his two terms in office, from 1869-1877. Taylor Riley's offense was failure to pay a liquor retailer tax, according to the CIS Index to Presidential Executive Orders & Proclamations. (A photocopy of the relevant page is appended.) Grant spared others convicted of perjury, contempt of court, counterfeiting, illegal distilling of liquor, failure to destroy revenue stamps, and mistreatment of seamen, among other offenses. Grant's 1872 Amnesty Act also granted wholesale clemency to many ex-Confederates.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
