Whoopi Goldberg - The Collection (Day 1)
Julien?s Auctions is proud to present ?Whoopi Goldberg: The Collection,? the first auction celebrating the icon?s life, career, and passion for fine art, d?cor, and fashion. Goldberg, one of 21 EGOTs (winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), an actor, producer, director, writer, comedian, talk show star, and political activist, is known for breaking ground. Born in 1955, Goldberg was raised by her single mother in a housing project in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. She began working as a performer in the 1970s, but first became known to most audiences through her 1983 off-Broadway production The Spook Show, which became a sensation in New York, and proved to be a watershed in her career. Mike Nichols was passionate about the show, and brought it to Broadway. In 1985 Goldberg won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for the show. Nichols introduced Goldberg to Steven Spielberg, who cast her as Celie in his 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker?s novel The Color Purple. The film, and Goldberg's performance, became cultural phenomena. She was nominated for an Academy Award and won her first Golden Globe for best actress, becoming one of the most popular movie stars of the 1980s. Her success as a film actor grew in the 1990s with the blockbusters Sister Act and Ghost, for which she won the 1991 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the second Black woman to win an Oscar. For Ghost, she also won a Golden Globe and the Black Entertainer of the Year Award from the NAACP. Throughout her career, she has appeared in 150 films. In the 1990s, Goldberg hosted the Academy Awards three times, becoming the first woman to do so. From 1986 to 1998 she co-hosted seven live Comic Relief showcases and co-directed the first, ultimately receiving a special Emmy for her participation in the series, which raised funds for the homeless...Whoopi Goldberg - The Collection (Day 2)
